I've often written about the importance of remembering and promoting our local and national history. We have dedicated local historical societies and other volunteers, volunteer groups and schools to perform this important task of telling our local and national story. The story of Breaker Morant, Peter Handcock and George Witton, who served with the British forces in the Boer War and were court martialled and executed in 1902, is a story many Australians know something of - mostly as a result of the movie made many years ago starring Jack Thompson.

Casey business backs rebuilding of East Timor school

Local small business owner, newsagent David Ferres of Arndale Lotto in Croydon is raising money to support the rebuilding of a school in East Timor. Inspired by a bike tour of the country, Mr Ferres is aiming to raise $10,000 to rebuild a school in the community of Groto for 700 students. Those who wish to assist David in reaching the target can purchase raffle tickets until June 30 from Arndale Lotto (within in the Arndale shopping centre). Local businesses have kindly donated thousands of dollars in prizes.
